Haunt at Great Oak
The haunt returns October 2025
This is a brief explanation of how we created our ghosts, and how you could create your own.
Materials
Wire clothes hanger, electrical wire or similar for the shape - Required
Sheer fabric - Required
Black light - Optional
Fishing line - Optional
Oscillating fan - Optional
Smart plugs - Optional
Cut approximately three feet of wire. Find the middle point and start bending from there in an outline of what a person's head (facing forward), neck and shoulders would look like.
Cut three pieces of the sheer fabric approximately six feet in length. It's best to have them not exactly the same length and to have one that's about six inches longer than the others.
Ghostly body... Cut a slit in the middle of two pieces, to put the head of the ghost through. One piece should fall over the front/chest and back of the ghost and the other piece goes over the shoulders to act like arms.
Ghostly head... Lay out the fabric and place the wire frame, with the ghostly body, so it is approximately centered to the length of fabric. Fold the fabric down onto the head, and then begin wrapping the length around the head. Once you have the two ends of the length of fabric meet each other, tie them together to prevent things from falling apart. You don't want to wrap the fabric for the head too tightly and it should have a little bit of play to it. This will allow you to adjust the fabric and position it for the effect that you want.
If you don't want to do anything spectacular with these ghosts, you could hang them using a variety of methods. For example: decoration hooks/wire, fishing line, electrical wire (if used for the shape), etc
Placing a black light in the room with the ghost(s) can make them glow at night. If you are able to place the black light in the window sill then that will give the most direct light to your ghost(s).
We attached a stationary fishing line through the top of the ghost at an angle, so it would slide away from the window when released. Then an oscillating fan was placed behind the ghosts with another fishing line running from the side of the fan, over the curtain rod and back to the front of the ghost. This makes it so the ghosts have movement not only from the fan, but they will slide up and down the stationary fishing line too.
Home automation for your ghosts. If you are using a black light and/or fan, you might want things to come on only at certain hours of the day. Using a power strip to plug into a smart plug is what makes it so our magic happens daily with minimal intervention on our part.
